Marty was basketball star in high school, and played professionaly after graduating while attending RPI. One of the more visible players of the ABL, he was also pursing a law degree, and eventually had to quit playing as his law practice demanded more and more of his time.

Marty married Olive Exner Vandermeulen in 1941
