Born to Karl and Martha Strickland in Owensville, Indiana, Strickland went to IU before playing basketball with the NYAC and the Kautskys. He worked for Penzoil and then in 1942, he took a job with the State of Indiana in the Office of Price Administration. He left there in 1946 to open a Lincoln-Mercury car dealership, retiring in 1981.

Jim died of pneumonia in 1997 after suffering from dementia.

Jim was married to Jennifer Whitehead and they had one daughter and two sons.
