Born to Harry And Elenora Ginaven, Howard graduated from Ohio Wesleyan (playing football and basketball) and took employment at Goodyear, playing basketball on their industrial team. He worked at Goodyear for 41 years, both in Akron and in England. He retired to Florida, where he died in 2005.

He was married to Marjorie and they had three sons and a daughter.
