Born in Cincinnati to Thomas and Lula King, Tom attended Michigan State and then transferred to the University of Michigan, playing both basketball and baseball at both schools. He served in the Marine Corps during World War 2 and later in the Korean War. He briefly played for the Detroit Falcons before being employed by Wirtz Enterprises and Mechandise Mart in Chicago. A very successful businessman in Chicago, as well as an accomplished jazz drummer, King and his wife, Canadian Olympic figure skater Barbara Ann Scott, retired to Florida. Tom died in 2015, one of the last surviving players of the inaugural BAA seasons.

He and Barbara had a son and a daughter.
