Born in Abington, Pennsylvania, to Edward and Helen Getchell, Gorham grew up in Jenkintown and later went to Temple. where he played football and basketball. After graduating, he joined the Marines and served his country in World War 2.
Getchell signed with the NFL's Pittsburgh Eagles in 1946, but did not make the team. He played basketball that winter for the Ironmen, and in 1947 returned to the gridiron, playing 8 games for the Baltimore Colts.
