Born in rural Carlisle, Iowa, but raised in Lorimer, Deaton served in the USMC during World War 2, and finished college after the war. We played professionally for a few years before taking an athletic director job at Columbus Junction High School in 1949. Near as I can tell, he was at Simpson before joining the Marines. I think he played one season at Denison while waiting for deployment, and returned to Simpson after his discharge.

He coached at Simpson for years many years, and operated an insurance company following his retirement from Simpson, as well as running a campground. He died of a stroke in 1989.

He was married to Elsie and had a son and two daughters.
