While researcher John Grasso from the APBR was researching, he discovered that Orlyn Roberts had played in a few games with Dayton that first year. He has not been included on historical records as playing in the NBL prior. I was aware of his name having researched his cousin Wyman Roberts, who aside from being his teammate on the Metros, was a teammate for the legendary Waterloo Wonders.

Orlyn contracted tuberculosis in 1930, and was bedridden for many months, and missed a lot of school, and therefore the basketball season. He wound up having to repeat ninth grade, and by the time he reached his senior year, he was declared inelgible to play basketball by the Ohio State iIgh School Athletic Association because he already had played four years of high school basketball. However, under appeal, he was then declared eligible due to his illness in ninth grade that saw him miss virtually the entire season (like a modern-day medical red shirt).

He served in the army during World War 2. He was married twice; first to Jeanette Lenord and later to Eva Irene Drummond. He worked as a school custodian and later operated a grocery store.

I saw a page that stated he died in 1974, but every other place says 1973.

Born to Ernest (born c. 1883 in Canada) and Effie McCarty (born c. 1880). From Port Huron

His shooting percentages are horrible for the Falcons. .122 from the floor, and .100 from the line.

He coached at Lawrence Tech briefly after serving in the army, attaining the rank of Corporal.

UPDATED April 21, 2022
This is an instance where the original records seem to be way wrong. So many sources had him dying in 1973 or 1974, but apparently he died in 2000. I never could find any record of him passing in the 70's, so happy that new data came to light to correct this many years after this original post.

1941-42 Cleveland May Co. (AAU)

Brother of Pete Lalich.

Nick Lalich has one of the more remarkable biographies of the NBL. Born to Serbian immigrants in Lorain, Ohio, Lalich grew up in Cleveland and attended Ohio University, where he played basketball while obtaining a bachelor's degree in industrial arts, and went on to Columbia for his master's degree. He return to Cleveland to teach, but World War 2 erupted, and he entered the U.S. Army.
While in the army, it was determined that his knowledge of the Serbian language and culture would make him an asset to the OSS, now known as the CIA. Lalich became a key figure in the war in Europe, leading the Halyard Operation. This operation involved going into enemy territory in Yugoslavia and rescue downed Allied pilots. In four months of operation in 1944, Lalich and his crews rescued around 550 airmen with losing a single pilot or man. In the dark of night, Lalich and his crews flew C-47's into occupied territory, often landing in fields, to pick up the airmen.
After the war, Lalich worked for the CIA in Greece, staying there until 1957. He returned to the US to work as an account executive for Kenyon & Eckhardt. He moved to Baltimore to work the the Department of Commerce. He died in 2001 after a bout with esophageal cancer.
Lalich was married to  Mira Vukcevich (d. 1993) and had at least one daughter, Stephanie.

Roy Hurley

Born:

Died:

Career

1946-47 Toronto Huskies (BAA)
1947-48 Syracuse Nationals (NBL)
1947-48 Tri-Cities Blackhawks (NBL)

After graduating from Arsenal Tech, Hurley served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. He enrolled at Indiana University after his service, but was recruited by the Kautskys to join the NBL team. He went on the the Toronto Huskies for the inaugural season of the BAA, playing in the first BAA game in history. He returned to the NBL the next season. In 1950 he began working with Unified Funds Inc, staying there for 20 years. He worked as a marketing rep for the Indiana Pacers and as an assistant to the president for the Indianapolis Ice of the International Hockey League. Hurley died in 1993.

Roy Hurley is listed on other sites and encyclopedias as having attended Murray State. This appears to be from confusing Herb Hurley with Roy Hurley. Herb was a star at Murray State during World War 2, whereas Roy's obituary in the Indianapolis Star says absolutely nothing about Murray State. Roy Hurley does not appear on the Murray State all-time roster.
