Born to Robert (1884-1961) and Margaret (1890-1974) Oberbruner in Ashland, Wisconsin, "Red" went to De Padua High School (obituary says class of 1932, but that makes him 14 years old), and then went to Notre Dame where he played baseball and basketball. He played basketball briefly for Fort Wayne and then fought in World War 2. He spent 24 years as the athletic director at Milton College and was also the baseball coach at UW-Parkside.
He married Ruth Licher (1924-2012) on October 25, 1947, and they had five sons, Ken, Larry, Jamey, Dan, and Dick, and a daughter, Trish Miller.
