Griffith did not play basketball until he went to college, where he scored 1941 points in his collegiate career at Alderson-Broaddus. In 1941, he passed Stanford's Hank Luisetti for most career points in college basketball history at the time. After school, he took a job with Goodyear, as well as joining their basketball team for the 1941-42 season. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War 2 before returning to Goodyear. He was an employee at Goodyear for 39 years, transferring from Akron to Rockmart, Georgia, in 1956.
He married Helen (1919-2010) and had two daughters, Karen McCloud and Kay Garner.
