Born in Illinois to Harry and Minerva Gainer. He missed part of the 1938-39 season due to a separated shoulder he suffered in a game against Butler. He was an All-American in 1941 and the first DePaul player to play in the NBA. He played professionally in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, retiring from basketball in 1950. He worked as a salesman until his death at 51, in 1970.

Gainer was married to Anne Omerzel.
