Born to Peter (1884-1971) and Margaret (1887-1947) Dietz in Indiana, Dietz played for Indianapolis after attending Butler. He played at Great Lakes during World War 2, before returning to the Kautskys. Dietz allegedly was coaching high school basketball while playing for Indy prior to World War 2. He was also a very good tennis player, and wound up as Butler's tennis coach. He was an assistant coach to Tony Hinkle at Butler for 24 years, including on the notable 1961-62 squad.
Bob married Constance Koehler (1927-1999) and they had two children.
Some places say that Dietz also played college ball at North Carolina, but he spent four years playing at Butler.
