Alvarez was born in Argentina, and his family moved to Havana, Cuba. In 1915, when Armando was 3, the family immigrated to America, settling in Luke, Maryland. The family moved to Akron when Alvarez' father got a job at Goodyear. He played baseball and basketball at the University of Toledo. He played for the Chevrolets at the same time he began teaching and coaching. He worked in the Washington School District in Toledo for 35 years until he retired in 1976. During this time, he also officiated many games at the college level. Alvarez died of a heart attack in 1995.

He married Janette and had two sons, Ronald and Gerald.

  1. He gave up coaching around 1950 and was an administrator and assistant principal in the Whitmer district. He officiated games for many years at the college level.
