Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Svendsen was a star player for the Green Bay Packers, playing five years for the team as a center. Svendsen was named to the NFL All-Thirties team. He only played four games of high school basketball before playing basketball and football at Minnesota. Some sources seem to claim he went to Oregon State, but nothing I can find to back that up. He played one year of professional basketball, for Oshkosh. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2 and served in the South Pacific, and after was assistant line coach for the Minnesota football team for 4 years in the late 40's. His brother, Bud, also played pro football. He worked for many years in the family electrical manufatcuring business. George Svendsen was married to Marian (1915-2011) and had two sons, Steve and Jeff.
