Shipp was a very noteworthy basketball player of his era. He lead Cathedral High School (Indianapolis) to the Indiana State Catholic Championship in 1934 (this is an interesting fact which
means he would have been 20 years old if the birthdate is true. That is the date on his gravestone, so there is no reason to doubt it.) He joined Akron Goodyear as a player in 1936, and was semi-famously punched during a game against Harlem Renaissance in a 1936 game. It was northworthy because of the racial make-up of the two teams; Harlem was all-black, and Akron Goodyear was all-white. He played for 12 years in the NBL and NBA and is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Shipp was married to Edith Pike Shipp (1916-1999) and had one son, Gerald (1947-2013).
