Gunning was from Shelbyville, Indiana, attending Shelbyville High School, and played basketball at Indiana University  from 1934-1937. He played in the NBL for one season for Whiting, and then played briefly for Indianapolis after World War 2. A talented baseball player, Gunning also put in some time with Moline in the 3-I League in 1939. He went on to coach at Connorsville High School.

He was married to Ruth and they had three sons and one daughter.
